Welcome to AIM laboratory

FACILITIES:
Dr. Chengyu Cao’s lab -- Adaptive Systems, Intelligence and Mechatronics (AIM) Laboratory, has over 1,200 square feet of available space. The laboratory is equipped with instrumentation for machining small Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs), flight control on an UAV, testing sensors on the UAV, implementing control and navigation algorithms on high performance FPGA- and STM32 Micro controller based platforms, hardware-in-the-loop simulations, and designing and verifying electronic circuits.

EQUIPMENT:

chengyu cao

UV Excimer Laser Micromachining System from TeoSys Engineering LLC.

    • Includes a 193nm excimer laser, beam delivery, an automated two-axial motion system (plus one manual focus axis), a visible optical path, a video microscope, and a computer software interface for automatic programming of 2D vector cut paths.

MTi-G

    • The MTi-G is an integrated GPS and Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) with a Navigation, Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) processor which Includes MEMS inertial sensors and a miniature GPS receiver and also additional aiding sensors such as a 3D magnetometer and static pressure sensor. The internal low-power signal processor runs a real-time Xsens Kalman filter providing inertial enhanced 3D positioning and velocity estimates.

chengyu cao

FPGA Xilinx design kit

    • Available for implementing and testing control algorithms.

chengyu cao

Mixed Signal Oscilloscope from Tektronix Inc.
    • An oscilloscope with 16 digital channels and sample rates up to 5 GS/s and 10 mega-sample record lengths on all channels. Typical use includes characterization and debugging of hybrid analog/digital circuits such as embedded systems, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs), Digital-to-analog converters (DACs), and control systems.

chengyu cao

dSPACE 1104
    • Real-time development system consisting of powerful hardware and comprehensive software tools.

chengyu cao

Optical table from Technical Manufacturing Corporation
    • A vibration isolation system that uses compressed air to isolate the vibrations. Four control valves are used to adjust the height of the table. It can be used in many optical experiments.

chengyu cao

Mini-DM Deformable Mirror System from Boston Micromachines Corporation
    • A deformable mirror array where each mirror is controllable separately. Capable of high spatial resolution due to high account and low inter-actuator coupling. Capable of highly stable operation with zero hysteresis.

chengyu cao

AUV

  • A antonymous underwater vehicle, 1.2 meter length driven by four 30Wats water pumps. Maximum cruse speed 1.2m/s, battery life 1 hour, has underwater acoustic communication module, attitude sensor, navigation and  control system.

chengyu cao

Maxi-Joker 3 RC Helicopter manufactured by Minicopter in Germany
    • An RC helicopter that features a 15mm free wheel unit on the main rotor shaft which allows for a total weight of up to 20 kg. There is a second freewheel that serves to decouple the main rotor and the tail rotor. Other features include a split drive gear, a removable tail boom, and a slot for a 2s/1500mAh battery. Contains integrated electronics that make operation with no flybar possible. All contained within a rigid chassis.

chengyu cao

Human-like Robot System NAO from Aldebaran Inc
    • A robot with 25 degrees of freedom. When coupled with the inertial sensor, force sensitive resistors, Hall Effect sensors, infrared receiver and sonar sensors, allows  for a high level of stability and fluidity in its movements. Python language is used to program on the On-Board computer system.

chengyu cao

quadrocopter

  • Quadrocopters with open source control boards: Each includes 4 motors that have a total of 1000 Watts power. It is equipped with 3 axis Murata Piezo gyro, an Atmega48PA microcontroller and 4 20 amp Electronic Speed Controllers (ECS).
